For Dental Insurance Coordinators ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using Perplexity to research payer-specific coverage policies, documentation requirements, and timely filing rules in minutes — instead of navigating insurance company portals for 20-40 minutes per question. Perplexity searches the web in real time and summarizes current policy information with cited sources you can verify.
HIPAA Reminder: Perplexity is a general web search tool. Never enter patient names, insurance IDs, or other PHI. Research payer policies only — apply the findings to specific patient cases in your HIPAA-compliant practice management software.
What you'll need
What you should see: A simple search interface with a "Focus" option and a text box for your question.
Unlike Google, Perplexity reads multiple web pages and synthesizes the answer for you — with citations. This is much faster than reading 5 different insurer portal pages yourself. The sources appear as numbered footnotes you can click to verify.
Click the Focus button (or dropdown) near the search box and select Web — this searches the full web. This is best for most coverage policy questions.
Type a specific question about the payer and procedure:
What are Delta Dental PPO coverage criteria and documentation requirements for dental implants? What clinical information needs to be submitted with a pre-authorization request?
What you should see: A structured answer listing the coverage criteria, typical documentation requirements (X-rays, clinical notes, tooth extraction history), and any exclusions — with source citations from Delta Dental's provider manual or related resources.
Perplexity maintains context within a conversation. Follow up with:
Use Perplexity for procedures that frequently cause confusion or denial:
What are Cigna Dental's coverage requirements for periodontal scaling and root planing (CDT D4341)? How many teeth or quadrants can be treated per claim? What documentation is required?
At the start of each plan year, research upcoming changes:
What changes did Delta Dental make to their 2025 dental coverage benefits and fee schedules? Are there any new limitations or CDT code changes for 2025?
